In the small Croatian village of Brodski Varoš, a female white stork named Malena was shot in the wing in 1993, leaving her unable to fly and migrate. Local caretaker Stjepan Vokić rescued her, built a rooftop nest, and cared for her year-round.
In 2002, a male stork named Klepetan began returning each spring from South Africa—about 13,000–14,500 km—to mate with her. For 19 years, Klepetan faithfully returned each year, helping raise 66 chicks (with Vokić assisting by caring for Malena and supporting the nest). Their devoted partnership captured hearts in Croatia and beyond, becoming a symbol of loyalty.
Malena passed away peacefully in July 2021, with Klepetan nearby and Vokić caring for her. Klepetan continued returning afterward, even finding a new mate.
