France has a law that bans “planned obsolescence” and defines it as using methods meant to deliberately shorten a product’s life so people replace it sooner. The offense can carry criminal penalties.
In early January 2018, French authorities opened a preliminary investigation into Apple over alleged “deception and planned obsolescence” after complaints linked to the controversy over older iPhones being slowed through software-related performance management.
