BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – On Monday, Jan. 19, people from across the country will be honoring the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Several events are scheduled in the area to allow members to come together and serve their community.
Monday, Jan. 19
- MLK Day of Service: The Gardere Initiative asks the community to join them for their annual MLK Day of Service at BREC’s Hartley/Vey Park. Volunteers are needed at 8 a.m. to help with neighborhood cleanups, repainting projects, and community garden work.
- The River Road African American Museum in Donaldsonville is also participating in MLK Day of Service beginning at 9 a.m.
- MLK Fest 2026: The Walls Project invites the Baton Rouge community to take part in community service beginning at 9 a.m. at the MLK Community Center on Gus Young Ave. Following community service, the MLK Block Party and Resource Fair will be held from 12-3 p.m. at Park Medical Elementary School. This family-friendly event will feature live entertainment, a community resource fair, craft vendors, food trucks, and more.
- Knock Knock Children’s Museum MLK Day event: The Knock Knock Children’s Museum will be open from 10 a.m. through 4 p.m for its annual “I Have A Dream Day.” The museum will hold special activities centered around service and community building. The cost is free for members and a $15 regular admission for non-members. Children under the age of two can get in for free.
- Baker MLK Day event: Baker is hosting a special program to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event starts at 10 a.m. and will be held at the Baker Municipal Building, which is located at 3325 Groom Road in Baker.
- Denham Springs MLK Jr. Celebration: The celebration will take place at 10:45 a.m. at the Roberts United Methodist Church, located at 201 Julia Street in Denham Springs.
