In Japan, an African grey parrot named Yosuke went missing after flying out of his cage in Nagareyama, Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo. The bird was rescued by police from a neighbor’s roof and taken to a local police station. While authorities searched for his owners, Yosuke remained silent and refused to communicate with them.

 

After spending a night at the station, the parrot was transferred to a nearby veterinary hospital. It was there that Yosuke began to speak, surprising the staff and police. He clearly recited, “I’m Mr. Yosuke Nakamura”, and went on to provide his full home address, including the street number. The veterinary team even reported that Yosuke entertained them by singing songs, showing off his intelligence and charm.

 

Police immediately checked the address, and it turned out that the Nakamura family indeed lived there. Thanks to Yosuke’s precise instructions, the family was contacted and reunited with their beloved pet. The Nakamuras explained that they had been teaching Yosuke his name and home address for about two years, preparing him for situations like this.

 

Interestingly, Yosuke wasn’t as cooperative with the police as he was with the veterinary staff. Officer Shinjiro Uemura mentioned that despite friendly attempts, the bird completely ignored him at first. It was only after a few days in the care of the veterinarian that Yosuke felt comfortable enough to speak and guide the authorities back home.

 

This remarkable story highlights the intelligence of African grey parrots, known for their ability to mimic human speech and remember detailed information. Yosuke’s adventure demonstrates not just a pet’s cleverness, but also the strong bond between humans and their animal companions.
