At what point does the cost of a war become too high — and who decides that?
Officials from the Trump administration told lawmakers during a closed-door congressional briefing that the first six days of the U.S. military operation involving Iran have cost at least $11.3 billion, according to a source familiar with the discussion.
The estimate was shared with senators this week as lawmakers seek more details about the rapidly expanding conflict. Officials noted the figure represents only part of the current expenses and does not reflect the full cost of the operation.
During the briefing, officials also said roughly $5.6 billion worth of munitions were used during the first two days of strikes.
Lawmakers expect the White House to soon request additional funding from Congress, with some officials suggesting the request could reach $50 billion or more.
The military campaign began February 28 with coordinated U.S. and Israeli airstrikes and has since spread into Lebanon, disrupting energy markets and global transportation.
Some members of Congress have raised concerns the continued fighting could quickly drain U.S. military stockpiles, prompting the Pentagon to meet with defense contractors to help replenish supplies.
The administration has not released a public estimate for the total cost of the conflict or how long the operation could continue.
